How Golden Squares Activate and Persist
Whenever a winning cluster pays out, the grid squares behind those winning symbols are highlighted as Golden Squares. Those squares behind the cluster stay dormant during normal base game spins until a rainbow symbol lands anywhere on the 6 by 5 layout.

[Squares Cleared at End] [Golden Squares Activate!]
[of Base Spin Cascades] [Reveal Coins, Clovers & Pots]
When a rainbow symbol lands, all active golden squares activate, flipping to reveal bronze, silver or gold coins, a clover symbol, or a Pot of Gold. Once revealed, any four leaf clover multiplies adjacent coin values. Pot of Gold collectors then aggregate all values on the grid, and when the last pot resolves, every remaining square activates again with fresh symbols. The loop repeats until no new Pot of Gold appears, after which all coins and pots pay out and the squares are wiped. In the base game, golden squares remain active only through a single spin's cascade sequence, then reset once cascades cease.
That behavioural finding is directly relevant here. Golden Squares create a visible, accumulating "almost there" board state. The longer a Rainbow fails to arrive, the more loaded the grid looks, and the stronger the pull to keep spinning. Recognising that design pressure is part of playing the game sensibly.
